Recap: Quotes Member Meeting 2/16/10

Hello Members!

If you weren’t able to make it out to the meeting Tuesday, February 16, here’s a recap of what you missed:

Glenn Gutek of Awake Consulting and Coaching, a firm that teaches leadership principles to small businesses and organizations, presented an interactive workshop to teach Quotes members about their individual leadership styles.

Glenn started out by teaching us the three maxims of leadership:

1. Leadership is more about who you’re becoming than what you have done in the past

2. Being an effective leader is fundamentally more about who you are than what you do

“In the task of leadership, being is far more important than doing,” Glenn said. He explained that leaders have the potential to impact more people based upon who they are and that their actions have greater ramifications because of this.

3. Leaders understand that the process is more important than arriving at the destination. He explained that good leaders understand that the ends do not justify the means.

Glenn then explained the Meyers-Briggs personality assessment test and how it’s important to understand how you best operate in order to effectively lead others. He explained all of the components (energy sources, how we process information, decision-making styles and worldview) and let members determine which of 16 distinct personality types they each are.

Then, Glenn administered a leadership style assessment. Based on a questionnaire that Quotes members filled out, they were able to learn whether they are a Charismatic, Technician, Strategist, Team Builder, Manager or a Directive in their leadership approach.

Glenn finished up his presentation by explaining that the biggest problem isn’t your weaknesses but, rather, when you let one of your strengths run wild or you don’t realize that your strength isn’t particularly helpful in any given situation.

Make sure to come out to our next member meeting, Tuesday, March 2. We’ll be holding elections for the President-Elect position so make sure to come out and cast your vote to help shape the future of Quotes!
